I learned this traditional song from Cait O’Riordan’s version on a 1985 Pogues album and picked up an additional verse from listening to Danu’s lovely rendition with singer Ciarán Ó Gealbháin 17 years later. I’ve enjoyed singing this song at casual pub sessions for nearly 30 years and was recently honoured to be asked to sing it for a memorial service, which made me think perhaps it was time I recorded it.
